What to Expect

"The churches of Christ greet you." Romans 16:16

A Sincere Welcome

When you visit the South Amarillo church of Christ, you will be welcomed as an honored guest by a congregation devoted to New Testament worship. Our services are simple and strictly guided by the Bible (John 4:24). We aim to follow only scriptural patterns. Here is what you can expect during our assembly.

Singing as a Congregation

We sing because the New Testament instructs the church to "sing and make melody in our hearts to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16). Following the biblical pattern without addition or subtraction, our music is entirely a cappella — meaning we use no musical instruments. We invite you to join your voice with ours!

United in Prayer

As a body of Christians, we devotedly offer prayers to God (1 Thessalonians 5:17). During our assembly, a brother will lead the congregation in prayer while we all participate silently in our hearts, focusing our minds on the petitions being made (1 Corinthians 14:15). We use this time to thank God for His abundant blessings, seek His divine guidance, and bring the specific needs of our members before the Father.

Scriptural Teaching

Our teaching is presented by men of the congregation speaking one at a time to the entire gathered assembly (1 Corinthians 14:23). Because we follow the pattern of the whole church learning together, we do not utilize a divided Bible Class or Sunday School system. We encourage you to follow along in your own Bible, take notes, and — like the Bereans of old — verify the truth of everything presented (Acts 17:11).

The Lord's Supper

Each Sunday morning, we participate in the Lord's Supper to remember the body and blood of Christ (Acts 20:7). We follow the scriptural example closely: a brother gives thanks for a single loaf of unleavened bread, which is shared among the assembly. He then blesses a single cup containing the "fruit of the vine," which is passed until all have partaken (Mark 14:23). As our guest, please do not feel any pressure to participate; this is a memorial for the disciples of Christ.

The Collection

Following the command given to the early church, we take up a collection every first day of the week as we have been prospered (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). These contributions fund the spread of the gospel and provide care for Christians in need. We want our visitors to know there is absolutely no obligation to contribute. This collection is the sole responsibility of our local members.

An Invitation

At the close of the lesson, we sing a "song of invitation." This provides an opportunity for anyone who wishes to become a Christian or requests the prayers of the church to come forward. This is a purely voluntary act; you will never be singled out, pressured, or embarrassed. If you would prefer to study the Bible or discuss salvation in a more private setting, we are ready to assist you at any hour of the day.
